Dinan

The city of Dinan is situated in the north west of France and has a population of around 14,170.

Dinan is not only very popular, it is also regarded as one of the best preserved and most beautiful Medieval small towns in Brittany. Some may say its like a picture postcard.

Dinan’s port is stunning and is where you will arrive if you come by boat from Dinard or Saint-Malo. Old stone houses line the quay. Most are now waterside restaurants and shops. A great place to visit is the Maison de la Rance discovery centre, where you can learn all about life on the river.

You will find some of the best examples of the towns quaintest half-timbered houses in Place des Merciers. Opposite is the pedestrianised Rue de la Cordonneries, known as ‘thirsty street’ as it has 9 bars along it.

If you are feeling energetic climb the 158 steps to the top of the 132ft high ‘Tour de l’Horloge for some stunning views over Dinan and the surrounding areas. On a clear day you can see as far as Mont-Saint Michel.

The towns 13th century castle is now home to the museum. A great place to view the magnificent oldest and most impressive 8804ft long ramparts in Brittany.

Until the 18th century Dinan’s Rue du Petit-Fort was the main point of access. The cobbled hill is incredibly beautiful.

Dinan has been designated a Town of Art and History (Ville d’Art et d Histoire) The town is full of sculptors, artists and glassblowers.
