The Moorish presence resulted in the name and layout, as Alfama comes from the word “al-hamma” (meaning hot springs in Arabic). The 12th century was dominated by Christians and saw the expansion of the neighbourhood. This was followed by a period of decline due to wealthy residents moving westwards.
However, life continued in the old narrow streets of Alfama, and not even the 1755 earthquake destroyed many of its buildings.
