€1 Houses Augusta, Siracusa Provincia, Sicily
There have been many €1 house initiatives introduced throughout the island of Sicily and one of our favourites is the city of Augusta, situated in the Siracusa province. The city is very historic and undoubtedly beautiful although many of the older buildings look dilapidated. The city is located by the sea on the Ionian coast between Catania and Syracuse.
We love the old town which is an island connected to the mainland by two bridges. Don’t miss the castle in the city centre that dates back to the 13th Century and boasts eight towers. The city also has an abundance of historic churches and religious buildings.
The commune has introduced the €1 house scheme to attract new residents and businesses and inward investment into the community. The mayor, Maria Concetta Di Pietro will request owners of abandoned vacant properties transfer them to the commune and they can then be allocated to new owners that will undertake to renovate and restore these historically important buildings.
The new owners may use the restored buildings for business premises with preferences for art and craft businesses that will enhance the tourism sector significantly.
We also understand that it may be possible to apply for a grant to help restore certain properties of significant historical importance, or for the commune to contribute to certain renovation projects.
