Malta – The Nomad Residence Permit

Malta – The Nomad Residence Permit

Malta – The Nomad Residence Permit

Malta already welcomes digital nomads from within the EU. Individuals that can work remotely can live and work in Malta whilst still being employed in another country. The attractive lifestyle and reasonable cost of living makes this an attractive option and there is an established community of entrepreneurial expatriates.

The Nomad Residence Permit is aimed at “third country” or non-EU nationals that would normally require a visa to travel to Malta. The aim of the scheme is to allow non-EU nationals the right to reside in Malta for 12 months whilst still being employed in another country. To be eligible for the programme you must be able to prove a minimum gross income of €2,400 per month. You also need to be employed by a company registered outside Malta and have a contract of employment.

Alternatively, you can be a business owner or shareholder in an entity registered outside of Malta, or be a freelancer offering services to establishments in a foreign country providing you have valid contracts.

In addition to the requirements above you also need a valid travel document, health insurance for the duration of your stay, have purchased or rented a property in Malta and be able to pass a background verification check.

If successful, the applicant will be issued with a Malta Nomad Residence Permit for 12 months and this can be renewed for a further 12 months if you remain eligible. If you intend to stay in Malta for less than a year you will be issued with a National Visa that is valid for 91-180 days. It is possible for family members to join the applicant of the Nomad Residence Permit.

There is an additional financial requirement relating to each family member and that equates to proving additional earnings equivalent to 20% of the Malta median wage for each family member to be added.

In addition to applying and a letter of intent that states the intended duration of the stay, a government fee of €300 for the applicant and €300 for each additional family member is payable.

The application will be processed normally within 30 days during which time full due diligence and background checks will be completed.

We work closely with immigration specialists and legal practises that offer full support and services for applicants of the Malta Nomad Residence Permit. Contact us
