The Normandy town found itself in the spotlight this week as BBC Two’s Secrets of the Bayeux Tapestry: Inside the Museum, narrated by Michael Palin, revealed the extraordinary story behind the tapestry’s recent journey from Bayeux to the British Museum in London.

Almost 70 metres long and nearly 1,000 years old, the fragile masterpiece was transported in a specially designed shock-absorbing container, travelling beneath the Channel Tunnel. The programme also explored the tapestry’s history, conservation and some of the mysteries surrounding its survival – including a curious theory about a burn mark possibly caused by cigar ash during the Second World War.
